Dr. Goldstein:
“Heart disease is a very common complication of having diabetes. But what’s also important to recognize is that there are really two aspects of the diabetes that contribute to cardiac disease [heart disease].

“There’s the blood sugar level, which can promote some vascular damage [blood vessel damage]. But, also insulin resistance as an underlying cause of the diabetes, by itself has been shown to be a very strong factor that promotes cardiovascular [heart] disease.”
